It’s hard to fathom that in a country so rich and powerful, we can’t tackle mental illnesses that are crippling millions of Americans, including millions of young people.

According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness, 1 in 5 people suffer from a mental disorder. What’s more shocking is that 1 in 6 young people battle a mental illness each year.

How can we ignore such a crisis that is impacting so many people? Moreover, the lack of resources for people is shocking. It seems like mental disorders are only treatable for the super-rich or the well-connected.

What about those who lack the resources? What happens to them? They are left behind to deal with the pain and torment by themselves without treatment or answers.

Those in power must make it easier for all people regardless of their income status or race to have access to mental illness treatment. Until our government makes this possible it is up to us to be there for each other and make sure those we know who are suffering know they are not alone.
